Parachinar faces dire humanitarian crisis

Parachinar and over a hundred surrounding villages are facing a severe humanitarian crisis as road blockages have halted all supplies. Approximately 500,000 residents are trapped in the area, leading to increasing reports of starvation.

Atleast 25 trucks loaded with food supplies arrived in Parachinar last night, prompting long lines of residents eager to purchase essential groceries.

However, many items were sold at exorbitant prices. Tomatoes were priced at Rs700 per kilogram, while cauliflower, ridge gourd, and onions were all being sold for Rs500 per kilogram. Green chilies and arvi were available at Rs800 and Rs500 per kilogram, respectively.

Local residents reported that a 16-kilogram tin of ghee is selling for Rs11,000 , a 50-kilogram bag of sugar for Rs10,000, and tea at Rs2,200 per kilogram. Faced with such steep prices, many were unable to buy the necessary items and could only inquire about costs.

Community members expressed that 25 trucks are insufficient to meet the needs of the large population. They are demanding that the shortages of fuel and LPG be addressed and are calling for a convoy of at least 500 trucks to be sent to Upper Kurram.

Additionally, the lack of petrol and diesel has forced residents to travel on foot, with public transport, ATMs, mobile networks, hotels, and restaurants in the district remaining closed. Schools and other educational institutions are also shut down.

In response to the crisis, the district administration has stated that they are implementing measures for public welfare and are actively working to secure the roads. They have assured the community that every effort will be made to establish sustainable peace and order in the region.
