The Federal Board of Revenue integrated 160 additional large retailers into its point of sales (POS) system in October 2024, bringing the total number of registered Tier-I retailers to 9,290, Business Recorder reported.
As of September 2024, the FBR had registered 9,130 retailers in the POS system, primarily targeting transactions from Tier-I establishments such as hotels and restaurants.
According to the FBR’s data compiled by October 17, 2024, among the 9,290 large retailers using the POS system, 676 are restaurants, and 507 are retailers in the leather and textile sectors.
Moreover, approximately 64,000 traders are registered under the Tajir Dost Scheme. But tax payments remain low, with only 575 traders contributing less than Rs 1.3 million in total.
In August, the FBR amended an SRO about the Tajir Dost Scheme two days before the traders’ nationwide strike against new taxes and exorbitant electricity bills.
Tajir Dost Scheme Chief Coordinator Naeem Mir had said that the authority would not “fight for non-filers under any circumstances, as the burden is borne by the salaried class.”

A committee would be formed at the commissioner level, in which local representatives of traders would also be notified, he said and added that it would decide the amount of tax for different areas and markets, the chief coordinator explained.
Last month, media reported that the FBR would impose “significant fines on large retailers” caught issuing non-certified electronic invoices or receipts to customers.
