Country music legend Dolly Parton has expressed her surprise and delight over Beyoncé’s updated rendition of Parton’s iconic 1973 hit “Jolene.”
In a recent interview with E! News, Parton revealed that she was not expecting Beyoncé to put her own spin on the classic song when the pop superstar decided to cover it on her album Cowboy Carter.
“Well, I think it was very bold of her,” Parton said. “When they said she was gonna do ‘Jolene,’ I expected it to be my regular one, but it wasn’t. But I love what she did to it.”
Parton, who is renowned for her own acclaimed songwriting, praised Beyoncé’s bold reinterpretation of the lyrics. Rather than pleading with the titular Jolene not to take her man, as Parton did in the original, Beyoncé’s version adopts a more assertive and confident tone, warning Jolene not to even try.
“She wasn’t gonna go beg some other woman like I did,” Parton said. “‘Don’t steal my man.’ S—, get out here, bitch. You ain’t stealin’ mine.”
Parton expressed her admiration for artists who cover her songs, regardless of how they choose to interpret them. She even provided an introduction for Beyoncé’s version of “Jolene,” humorously referencing the titular character.
This unexpected collaboration between the two music icons highlights the enduring power and versatility of Parton’s songwriting, as well as Beyoncé’s unique ability to reimagine and reinvent classic tracks. Parton has consistently praised Beyoncé’s rendition of “Jolene,” previously celebrating its release and congratulating the singer for hitting No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Chart with another track.
