The initial medical report in the death case of young Karachi entrepreneur Mir Raza Ali found torture marks on his body and concluded that the fatal bullet entered from behind, strengthening suspicions of murder, according to sources.

According to the preliminary report, all 14 points raised by Karachi Police Surgeon Dr Samia Syed regarding shortcomings in the original post-mortem examination have been addressed, sources said.

The findings are significant as Dr Syed had earlier raised serious forensic concerns over the July 29 post-mortem and recommended a fresh examination if the questions could not be satisfactorily answered.

The preliminary report states that marks of violence were found on Raza’s body.

It also indicates that the bullet struck him from behind, a finding that could challenge any suggestion that the death was self-inflicted.

Raza’s body was exhumed on Saturday at the PECH Society graveyard on Tariq Road for a second medical examination. A medical board examined the remains in the presence of his family and lawyer Jibran Nasir and collected various samples for chemical analysis.

The board had been tasked with addressing questions surrounding the circumstances of Raza’s death and determining whether the injuries were self-inflicted or resulted from violence.

The final findings are expected to be prepared after the completion of chemical analysis and examination of the collected samples.

The development comes days after Police Surgeon Dr Samia Syed identified 14 shortcomings in the original post-mortem report.

These included the absence of an X-ray, failure to collect hand swabs for gunshot residue testing, inadequate examination of the firearm injuries and lack of detailed documentation of the bullet’s trajectory.

The police surgeon had also questioned the failure to collect a DNA sample despite the victim’s face being unrecognisable and raised concerns over the documentation and forensic photography of the injuries.

The latest preliminary findings have given further weight to the suspicion that Raza was killed, although investigators will have to establish the circumstances of his death through the complete forensic and criminal investigation.

Mir Raza Ali, 25, had gone missing from Karachi’s Ferozabad area before his body was found in Gulistan-e-Jauhar on July 29.

Investigators have also accessed his Apple Watch with assistance from the Sindh Counter Terrorism Department’s technical team.

Police said the smartwatch contained information about financial transactions and other potentially relevant data.

The iPhone recovered from Raza has not yet been unlocked by forensic experts, while investigators believe data had been deleted from both devices before they were recovered.

Raza’s body was reburied after Saturday’s examination. His family has been awaiting the medical findings, hoping they would help establish the circumstances surrounding his death and put an end to speculation over the case.
