Iran has called for closer regional cooperation to restore stability in the Strait of Hormuz, accusing the United States of fuelling tensions in the strategic waterway.

According to Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, Araghchi made the remarks during separate telephone conversations with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi and Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Monday.

The discussions focused on bilateral ties and the latest regional developments, with Araghchi stressing the need for coordinated diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and safeguard regional stability.

He said countries in the region should strengthen cooperation to “eliminate the state of instability in the Strait of Hormuz resulting from the aggressive actions of the United States.”

The remarks come as a fragile calm has largely held since Friday after Washington and Tehran suspended military operations following 13 days of escalating hostilities that began on July 11.

During the fighting, the United States carried out air strikes inside Iran, while Tehran responded by targeting what it described as US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries.

The escalation unfolded despite a memorandum of understanding signed by Washington and Tehran in June, which called for an end to hostilities and negotiations on a broader agreement aimed at ending the conflict that began with Israeli and US military action on February 28.

US President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire void on July 8 after attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington blamed on Tehran.

The United States has since demanded that Iran halt attacks on commercial shipping and ensure freedom of navigation through the strategic waterway.

Tehran, however, maintains that vessel traffic in waters adjacent to its coastline should operate under a mechanism supervised by Iran, reflecting continuing differences between the two sides over security in one of the world’s most important energy transit routes.
