Gulf airlines cancel flights as US-Iran tensions hit air travel
2 min readRenewed fighting between the United States and Iran has disrupted air travel across the Gulf, with several airlines cancelling or rescheduling flights to Kuwait and parts of Saudi Arabia amid heightened regional security concerns.
The latest disruptions come after military hostilities between Washington and Tehran resumed earlier this month, ending a brief ceasefire and triggering fresh missile and drone attacks across the region.
Emirates cancelled eight flights between Dubai and Kuwait on Sunday, while Etihad Airways suspended its Abu Dhabi-Kuwait services on July 19 and 20.
Air Arabia also cancelled or delayed multiple flights operating from Sharjah and Abu Dhabi to Kuwait, while Flydubai cancelled one of its scheduled services between Dubai and Abha in Saudi Arabia.
Kuwait Airways said it had rescheduled most of its commercial flights after operations at Kuwait International Airport were temporarily suspended on Saturday due to repeated missile and drone threats.
The renewed conflict has disrupted aviation just as regional air traffic had begun recovering from months of airspace restrictions imposed after the US-Iran war erupted on February 28.
Airlines have advised passengers to check the latest status of their flights before travelling to airports, warning that schedules remain subject to change as the security situation continues to evolve.
Kuwait remains hardest hit
Emirates cancelled eight services between Dubai International Airport and Kuwait International Airport, citing operational reasons, while Etihad said it was assisting affected passengers after suspending flights between Abu Dhabi and Kuwait for two days.
Air Arabia also cancelled several Kuwait-bound flights from Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, urging travellers to verify their flight status before departing for the airport.
Kuwait Airways said most of its operations had been rescheduled after the temporary closure of Kuwait International Airport, while Jazeera Airways reported intermittent disruptions caused by repeated closures of Kuwaiti airspace.
Passengers travelling with both airlines have been advised to monitor updates through their booking details and arrive at the airport only after receiving revised departure times.
Saudi flights also affected
In Saudi Arabia, Flydubai cancelled its Dubai-Abha service on Sunday, although another scheduled flight on the same route continued to operate.
The airline said passengers should regularly check flight updates, as schedules could change at short notice amid ongoing regional tensions.
