Newly elected Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Amjad Hussain was sworn into office on Monday at a ceremony attended by senior political leaders, including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Zardari.

Addressing the oath-taking ceremony, Amjad Hussain said the PPP had emerged as the largest party in the June 7 Gilgit-Baltistan elections, attributing the victory to the support of the region’s people, party leadership and workers.

“Allah Almighty has blessed the PPP with success in the elections,” he said, adding that the outcome reflected the trust placed in the party by the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.

The newly sworn-in chief minister said young people and women had played a significant role in the 2026 elections and thanked voters for giving the PPP what he described as a decisive mandate.

“The people have placed a heavy responsibility on the Pakistan Peoples Party through this mandate,” he said.

“The relationship between the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and the PPP is not new; it spans three generations.”

Amjad Hussain noted that the PPP had secured public support despite not being in power at the federal level, describing the result as unprecedented.

“For the first time, one political party is governing at the centre while another party has formed the government in Gilgit-Baltistan,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the PPP leadership, as well as leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), including Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Amir Muqam and former Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister Hafeezur Rehman, for facilitating the formation of the provincial government.

He also thanked Federal Minister Aleem Khan and his team for their cooperation.

The chief minister said the PPP had received a strong mandate in Diamer district for the first time and pledged to work to fulfil public expectations.

He stressed the need to improve road and air connectivity in Gilgit-Baltistan and promote the region’s tourism potential, saying its natural climate and landscape were unmatched in many parts of the world.

Before the ceremony, Bilawal visited the Yadgar-e-Shuhada memorial and offered prayers for the country’s martyrs.
