Four children drowned after falling into a pond in the Chunian district of Punjab, rescue and forest department officials said on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as 12-year-old Murad Akbar, 11-year-old Irfan Akbar, 8-year-old Maria Akbar, and 13-year-old Imran.

The Forest Department said the pond in Changa Manga forest had been constructed to provide drinking water for animals in the forest.

Officials added that rescue teams recovered the bodies and shifted them to Chunian Hospital.

According to sources, the children had come to their grandmother’s house from Toba Tek Singh to spend their summer holidays.

Local residents said the incident occurred when one child slipped into the pond, and the other children attempted to rescue him, but all four drowned in the 8 to 10-foot-deep water.
