Karachi to face 48-hours water outage
1 min readWater supply in Karachi will be disrupted for 48 hours starting Saturday as authorities shut down key infrastructure to connect a new main line to the existing network, officials said.
The shutdown will begin at 12:00 noon on April 25 and continue until April 27, affecting nine pumps at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, according to a statement issued by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation.
The officials said the move was necessary due to significant supply shortages caused by an ageing and deteriorated pipeline.
Installation of a new main line and its interconnection with the existing system, along with new valves, was described as essential to improve water distribution.
Work on the project will continue for approximately 44 hours, after which supply from seven of the nine pumps will resume on April 27. The remaining two pumps will stay offline for an additional five days.
Officials said the temporary shutdown will suspend supply from Phase 4, K2 and K3 of the Dhabeji system, resulting in a shortfall of about 250 million gallons per day. Despite the disruption, around 400 million gallons per day will continue to be supplied to the city.
Areas expected to be affected include North Karachi, Surjani Town, Scheme 33, Gulistan Johar, Gulshan Iqbal, Saddar and Taisar Town. Hydrants at Nipa, Safoora and Sakhi Hassan will also remain closed during the period.
