PTA moves against online sale of illegal medicines
1 min readThe Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has taken action against the illegal online sale of therapeutic goods, removing websites and social media pages selling unauthorised products, according to an official statement issued on Wednesday.
The authority said the action was taken after receiving a request from the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) regarding the sale of unregistered therapeutic goods, including medicines, medical devices and vaccines.
PTA said it enforced measures to block access to the identified content. It added that the concerned websites have confirmed removal of illegal products, while efforts are ongoing to have social media platforms take down related pages and groups.
“PTA remains committed to supporting national regulatory efforts to safeguard public health and prevent misuse of digital platforms,” the statement said, adding that further action will continue under applicable laws.
Meanwhile, local drug manufacturers have warned of a possible rise in smuggled and counterfeit medicines in the market, citing delays in official pricing approvals for new and advanced medicines, including treatments for cancer, heart disease and blood pressure.
Manufacturers said they have submitted applications for retail price approvals for around 80 to 90 medicines over the past year.
They added that while DRAP and the relevant pricing committee have approved the rates, final approval from the federal cabinet has been pending for an extended period, delaying market introduction of these drugs.
