US-Iran negotiations on track for Wednesday, says source
1 min readPakistan has said that momentum is building for the resumption of US-Iran talks in Islamabad as early as Wednesday, according to a senior Pakistani source involved in the discussions.
The source said that preparations were underway for a possible agreement involving direct or virtual participation by US President Donald Trump.
“The talks are moving forward and are on track for tomorrow,” the source said on Tuesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The comments came amid continued uncertainty over the diplomatic process as a ceasefire nears its end, with significant gaps still remaining between the two sides.
President Donald Trump looks for an agreement to prevent a further rise in oil prices and financial market disruption.
He also maintained that Iran cannot be allowed to acquire the capability to develop a nuclear weapon.
Tehran, meanwhile, is seeking to preserve its nuclear programme while using its strategic leverage over the Strait of Hormuz to secure sanctions relief and avoid a return to conflict.
According to an Iranian official who spoke to Reuters, the government is “positively reviewing” whether to attend the talks, despite earlier indications it would not participate, though internal deliberations are ongoing.
If the talks proceed, they would mark a key diplomatic test as the fragile ceasefire deadline approaches, with both sides signalling openness to engagement but remaining divided on core issues.
