Casualties mount as Iran-Israel war expands across region
2 min readThe ongoing war between Iran and Israel is causing a steady rise in casualties and property damage in both countries, according to official figures released on Sunday.
The Israeli Ministry of Health said at least 1,929 people have been injured since the start of the war, including 157 who were taken to hospitals in the past 24 hours.
Officials said nine patients are in critical condition, 42 are in moderate condition, and 70 have sustained minor injuries. Many of those admitted were hurt while heading to shelters during attacks.
On the Iranian side, the Ministry of Health and Medical Education said more than 1,200 people have been killed as a result of U.S. and Israeli strikes.
Ministry spokesman Hossein Kermanpour said the dead include about 200 children and 200 women.
He added that more than 1,000 people have been injured, including around 400 women.
The United States has carried out air strikes on oil depots in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Videos from foreign news agencies showed large fires and smoke rising after the facilities were hit.
According to Iran’s Fars News Agency, Sunday’s attacks targeted four oil storage depots and an oil transfer centre in Tehran and nearby Alborz Province. Four tanker drivers were reported killed.
The Iranian Red Crescent Society said at least 9,669 civilian units have been destroyed in the strikes so far, including 7,943 residential homes and 1,617 commercial units.
In Lebanon, at least 19 people were killed in an Israeli strike on a three-storey building in the southern village of Sir al‑Gharbiyah, according to the Lebanese state news agency.
Rescue teams are searching through rubble where women and children are believed to be among those trapped.
Meanwhile, precautionary measures were taken in Cyprus after about 1,000 people were evacuated from the Akrotiri area following reports of an Iranian-made drone crashing near a British military base.
