When asked about the legality of the killing of Khamenei, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said: “I mean, obviously from a human rights perspective, we are against any sort of killings.”

“From a human rights perspective, any killing of anyone is not in the interest of international human rights law,” he continued.

He was also asked about a strike at a girls’ school in Iran.

The girls’ school in Minab, in southern Iran, was hit on Saturday during the first day of U.S. and Israeli attacks on the country. Iran’s ambassador to the U.N. in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, said the strike killed 150 students. Reuters could not independently confirm the death toll.

“When it comes to a school, obviously, this is clearly a civilian institution that should never be attacked,” Turk said.

He said there should be an impartial investigation into the events, adding there are questions around the type of weapon that was used and the timing of the strike.

“The onus is now really on those who had conducted these strikes to conduct this type of investigation,” he said.

U.S. military investigators believe it is likely that U.S. forces were responsible for the strike, but have not yet reached a conclusion or completed their investigation, two U.S. officials told Reuters.
