Iran has announced the formation of a three-member council to oversee the country’s leadership transition, according to the official IRNA news agency on Sunday.

IRNA reported that the interim body will consist of the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council.

The council will temporarily assume all leadership duties in the country, though officials did not specify how long the arrangement would remain in place.

In a separate development, IRNA confirmed that Ali Shamkhani, a senior political adviser to the Supreme Leader and secretary of Iran’s Defence Council, was killed in recent US-Israeli strikes on Tehran.

The agency also reported that Major General Mohammad Pakpour, commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in the attacks.
