Pakistan yet to decide on T20 World Cup participation
2 min readPakistan’s participation in the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup remains uncertain, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) set to take a final decision after consultations with the government.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to make a final call on Monday following discussions with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Naqvi said the matter was reviewed at the highest level and that all options remain under consideration.
“Had a productive meeting with the Prime Minister,” Naqvi said in a post on social media.
“I briefed him on the ICC matter, and he directed that we resolve it while keeping all options on the table. It was agreed that the final decision will be taken either on Friday or next Monday.”
Meanwhile, the official unveiling ceremony of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup playing kit in Lahore has been cancelled.
The event had been scheduled to take place after the toss of the second T20 international between Pakistan and Australia.
Pakistan’s national squad is scheduled to depart for Colombo on February 2, while the T20 World Cup is set to begin on February 7, with matches hosted in India and Sri Lanka.
Pakistan are due to play the tournament opener against the Netherlands in Colombo on February 7, leaving little time for clarity if a decision is delayed until next week.
While speculation has grown around the possibility of Pakistan boycotting the tournament, sources indicate that a full withdrawal is not the only option under consideration.
One proposal under consideration is a more targeted protest, which could involve Pakistan refusing to play their high-profile match against India, scheduled for February 15 in Colombo.
