Marriage dispute behind Lahore university student’s suicide attempt: Police

Investigators say family opposition caused distress; student's condition critical

A dispute over a love marriage has surfaced as the primary reason behind the attempted suicide of a female student at a private university in Lahore, according to findings from the police’s initial investigation on Wednesday.

Police sources said Fatima wanted to marry Ahmed, a resident of her hometown, Narang Mandi, of her own choice, but her family was not willing to accept the proposal and instead insisted that she continue her education.

Police said the student became disheartened after being unable to marry by choice, and due to this mental stress, she attempted suicide.

Police said that Fatima’s last phone call was made to the same young man, Ahmed, after which she deleted his number from her mobile phone.

Police have taken Ahmed into custody for questioning.

Family members have recorded their statements with the police, while further investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Police officials said the student is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital and her condition is being closely monitored.

The incident occurred on Monday when Fatima, a D-Pharmacy student at a private university in Lahore, jumped from the fourth floor of the university building.

She was immediately shifted to the hospital in critical condition, where she remains under treatment.

Doctors said the student sustained serious injuries to her spine and lungs, and all necessary medical tests have been repeated.

Hospital sources said the student’s condition remains critical; however, a medical team is continuously monitoring her.

On Tuesday, Professor Farooq Afzal, Principal of the hospital and head of the medical board, told the media that Fatima was brought to the hospital at 12.30pm, where she was provided immediate medical assistance.

He said her condition has improved slightly compared to earlier, but the next 48 hours are extremely crucial to assess her chances of recovery.

According to the Principal of Ameeruddin Medical College, Fatima has been placed on a ventilator, and doctors have successfully stabilised her blood pressure and pulse.

However, she has sustained severe injuries to her legs, for which specialised medical care is ongoing.

The medical board said that complete recovery would require more time and close monitoring, and that the parents are being kept informed at every stage.

Police said that on the day of the incident, Fatima arrived at the university at 7.58am but did not attend class.

She remained on a phone call for approximately 27 minutes and, after deleting the call record, jumped from the building at around 8.30am.

Initial investigations revealed that her brothers had given her a new mobile phone a day before the incident.

Police officials said there was initially an impression that the student was dissatisfied with her academic results; however, investigations so far suggest the matter appears to be largely domestic in nature.

Police said that if any negligence or carelessness on the part of the university administration is proven during the investigation, legal action will be taken, and further progress in the case will be made after recording the student’s statement.

According to the university administration, all campus gates were closed following the incident, and the institution has been shut indefinitely.

A notification has been issued announcing the shift to online classes to ensure student safety and allow a full review of the situation.

The student’s sister said Fatima is the youngest among five siblings. She added that she had spoken to Fatima on the phone the night before the incident and that she appeared to be in a cheerful mood, with no indication of distress.

Police and hospital authorities said the complete facts of the case will only emerge once the investigation is fully concluded.
