Indian woman Sarbjit Kaur deported for violating pilgrim visa terms
Pakistani authorities have deported an Indian woman who overstayed her religious visa and married a local resident during her stay in Pakistan, officials said on Monday.
Sarbjit Kaur, an Indian national who entered Pakistan on a Sikh pilgrimage visa, was sent back to India after the completion of legal formalities, Punjab Minister for Minority Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora confirmed.
Kaur arrived in Pakistan on November 4 with a group of Sikh pilgrims through the Wagah-Attari border to attend the 555th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev at Nankana Sahib. Her visa was valid until November 13.
Officials said she failed to return to India with the rest of the pilgrims after the expiry of her visa and, during her stay, married a resident of Nankana Sahib, Nasir Hussain.
According to the minister, both Kaur and Hussain were taken into custody from Hussain’s native village, Pehray Wali, in Nankana Sahib district.
Following legal proceedings, the Indian woman was deported to India, while action will be taken against the Pakistani citizen under local laws.
The deportation was also confirmed by lawyer Ali Changezi Sandhu.
Authorities said visa regulations would be enforced strictly, warning that no concessions would be given in cases involving violations of immigration laws.
Kaur, 52, is a resident of Kapurthala district in Indian Punjab.
She was among 1,992 Sikh pilgrims who visited Pakistan for the religious celebrations and returned to India around November 13, while she remained behind, triggering legal action.
