Alleged bigamy, threats, and police pressure: British Pakistani man takes wife to court

The case highlights a complex dispute involving claims of marriage, financial dealings, and serious criminal allegations, with courts in both Pakistan and potentially the UK expected to play a key role in resolving the matter.

A British-Pakistani businessman has filed a legal case against his Lahore-based wife, accusing her of secretly planning to marry another man while still legally married to him.

The case, which has stirred significant attention, includes allegations of bigamy, intimidation, misuse of police authority, and unlawful termination of pregnancies, potentially leading to criminal proceedings under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The businessman, Mohsin Shah, a British citizen originally from Lahore, claims that his wife, became engaged to another Lahore-based businessman from a wealthy family in October 2025, with plans to marry in January 2026. Shah alleges that the engagement was carried out secretly, violating legal, ethical, and moral standards.

According to Shah, his wife and her father used local police and other state authorities to intimidate, threaten, and exert pressure on him in an attempt to silence him and prevent objections to the alleged second marriage.

He said these actions have caused severe distress to him and his family both in Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

The complaint also details the couple’s marriage, which Shah claims took place on 5 October 2024 in Malaysia during a holiday. Their Nikah was conducted via video call, with a Qari present and witnesses participating remotely. Shah asserts that the couple had been in a relationship for about five years prior to their marriage.

Shah further alleges that his wife became pregnant eight times during their relationship and marriage, and that abortions were performed on each occasion without his consent.

He claims to possess medical reports documenting these pregnancies. In addition, he disputes his wife’s claim to Lahore police that they met only twice, stating that evidence, including over 8,000 messages and approximately 450 photographs, demonstrates that they met hundreds of times and traveled together extensively over five years.

The legal notice also mentions audio recordings in which Shah claims his wife admits to marrying him, along with hotel receipts, flight records, and statements from Nikah witnesses, all of which he says corroborate the legitimacy of their marriage.

The notice alleges that the woman and her father pressured officials and used coercive tactics to obtain false statements. As a result, Shah has filed a case in a Lahore court against the Punjab Anti-Corruption team, wife and her father for their alleged involvement in these illegal activities.

In response, his father in law, wife and her lawyer have rejected all allegations, calling them “false and fabricated.”

They stated that the cases are “baseless, founded on fictitious information, and are currently pending before the courts.”

The lawyer clarified that while the five-year relationship between the couple is acknowledged, the marriage itself is disputed. They added that wife and her family intend to pursue legal action in London against Shah.
