Gilgit-Baltistan polls postponed due to harsh weather
The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday announced that the general elections scheduled for January 24 have been postponed due to severe weather, saying the decision was taken to ensure the safety of voters, election staff and security personnel.
The decision was taken during an All Parties Conference convened by the Election Commission in Gilgit, where representatives of political parties unanimously agreed that holding elections under the prevailing harsh weather conditions would not be feasible.
Following the conference, the Election Commission formally cancelled the existing election schedule and said a new polling date would be announced later.
Election officials said the decision was made in the interest of ensuring the safety of voters, polling staff and security personnel, as well as to allow for a transparent and smooth electoral process.
The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan said it would issue a revised election schedule after reviewing weather conditions and logistical considerations.
