The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly on Monday unanimously approved a motion to form a special committee to investigate the vandalism and arson at the Radio Pakistan building in Peshawar during the May 9 unrest.

The motion was moved by KP Law Minister Aftab Alam, who called for a dedicated inquiry committee to examine the incident and determine responsibility.

The House endorsed the proposal without opposition.

Nationwide protests erupted across the country following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on May 9, 2023.

Demonstrations were reported in several cities, including Islamabad, Lahore, Quetta, Karachi and Peshawar.

Clashes between protesters and law enforcement agencies were reported in multiple locations.

During the unrest, several government buildings, martyrs’ monuments and Lahore’s Jinnah House were attacked.

The Radio Pakistan building was also set on fire during the riots, prompting calls for a thorough investigation.

The special committee is expected to probe the circumstances surrounding the attack and submit its findings to the assembly.
