12 killed in shooting during Jewish festival in Sydney

Gunfire erupts during Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach; Suspected shooter shot dead

At least 12 people were killed and several others injured in a shooting incident on Sunday at a Jewish festival in a coastal area of Sydney, Australian authorities said.

The shooting took place at Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular tourist destinations, where multiple people were wounded and rushed to nearby hospitals.

According to officials, several people sustained injuries in the incident.

A spokesperson for the New South Wales Ambulance Service said that 13 injured individuals were transported to different hospitals.

Emergency services said rescue teams remained at the scene, working to save lives.

New South Wales Police said unknown armed individuals opened fire during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, confirming reports that 12 fatalities had occurred so far.

Police said one suspected shooter is dead and another is in critical condition.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “deeply shocking and distressing,” saying emergency response teams were on the ground and making every effort to treat the injured.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the New South Wales Police said the police operation was ongoing and urged the public to avoid the area.

Videos circulating on social media show people at Bondi Beach running amid the sound of gunfire and police sirens.

One video appears to show a suspected attacker wearing a black shirt firing a weapon, before being restrained by a man in a white T-shirt who disarmed him.

Bondi Beach is among the world’s most famous beaches and typically attracts large crowds of locals and tourists, particularly on weekends.
