Government lifts ban on gold import and export

Key SRO restored as authorities move to streamline precious metals trade
Gold Import | Export Ban Lifted | Pakistan News

In a major development, the federal government has decided to lift the ban on the import and export of gold.

Following approval from the federal cabinet, the Ministry of Commerce has issued a notification restoring the previously suspended SRO governing gold trade.

According to the notification, the government has also made certain amendments related to the import and export of precious metals and jewellery, although the overall regulatory framework for this trade will remain intact.

Officials said the framework will continue with enhanced transparency and improved automation to ensure safer and more efficient commercial processes.

The ban on gold import and export had originally been imposed in May this year.

On May 6, 2025, the Ministry of Commerce suspended, for 60 days, the SRO that regulates gold trade.

Sources said the restriction was introduced due to complaints regarding gold smuggling.

With the ban now lifted, legal trade in gold will resume, and commercial activity is expected to become easier.
