First image of COAS Syed Asim Munir as Field Marshal surfaces
The first official image of Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir bearing the five-star rank of Field Marshal has emerged, marking a historic moment in Pakistan’s military history. In the photograph, the Army Chief is seen wearing the Field Marshal insignia on his shoulders, holding a ceremonial baton, with a serious and composed expression on his face.
This development comes just hours after the investiture ceremony planned in honour of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir was postponed. According to official sources, the event, originally scheduled to be held at Aiwan-e-Sadr (the President House) in Islamabad at 4:30 PM, was deferred at the request of the Army Chief himself in light of the tragic Khuzdar school bus attack, which claimed the lives of several children.
The ceremony was set to be a significant national event, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, federal ministers, and top civil and military officials expected to attend. Field Marshal Munir was to be formally adorned with the five-star insignia in recognition of his exceptional leadership and service to the nation.
This is only the second time in Pakistan’s history that a serving Army Chief has been elevated to the rank of Field Marshal—the country’s highest and honorary military designation. The only other officer to have received this honour was General Ayub Khan, who was awarded the rank in 1965.
The rank of Field Marshal is largely symbolic and honorary, awarded to individuals who have rendered extraordinary services to the country. It does not carry any operational command authority but signifies unmatched recognition for military distinction.
