India denies withdrawal rumors from Asian Cricket 2025 event
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia, has denied rumors regarding withdrawal from the Asian Cricket Cup (ACC) 2025 event.
Recently, Indian media reported that India will neither participate in nor host the Asia Cup 2025 due to increasing tensions with Pakistan and Indian media reported.
Saikia stated that no decision has been made regarding Asian cricket events.
He acknowledged that news circulating since morning has come to their attention, claiming that India has decided not to participate in the Asia Cup and the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup.
Moreover, he further asserted that there is currently no truth to these reports, as their entire focus is on the IPL and the forthcoming series against England.
Also, he characterized the news reports as based on rumors and speculation, emphasizing that any decisions regarding ACC events will be officially announced by the board.
The Asia Cup 2025 was set to occur in September in India, while the Women’s Emerging Asia Cup is scheduled for June in Sri Lanka.
Since 2007, India has refrained from playing bilateral cricket against Pakistan due to strained relations.
The two nations only meet in international tournaments held at neutral venues.
Moreover, in 2023, Pakistan, as the official host of the Asia Cup, proposed a hybrid-model solution after the BCCI declined to travel to the neighboring country for the tournament.
India to withdraw from Asia Cup
“The Indian team can’t play in a tournament that is organised by the ACC, whose chief is a Pakistani minister [Mohsin Naqvi] that is the sentiment of the nation,” a BCCI source stated.
“We have verbally communicated to ACC about our withdrawal from the upcoming Women’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup, and our future participation in their events too is on hold. We are in constant touch with the Indian government.”
However, the BCCI has reportedly communicated its withdrawal from the women’s tournament verbally to the ACC and has put other upcoming ACC events on hold, according to Indian media.
