PDMA issues alert over rising GLOF threat in northern KP amid soaring temperatures
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for northern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa after an unusual spike in temperatures raised the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs).
According to a PDMA advisory, districts including Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kohistan have been declared sensitive.
Local administrations in these areas have been instructed to take precautionary measures to mitigate potential disasters.
The PDMA has warned that temperatures are expected to continue rising over the next 24 hours, significantly increasing the chances of glacial lake outbursts.
Such events can trigger sudden flooding, posing a serious threat to lives and infrastructure.
Authorities have been directed to alert residents in vulnerable areas and ensure that emergency and rescue services remain on high alert. The advisory also emphasized pre-positioning of emergency supplies and equipment to deal with any untoward situation effectively.
The PDMA has advised tourists to avoid unnecessary travel to high-risk regions and follow safety guidelines strictly.
District officials have been asked to maintain close coordination with relevant departments and monitor on-ground developments to ensure timely preventive action and protect lives and property.
