Pakistan hit by heatwave, temperatures set to rise to 48 degrees
A severe heatwave gripping Punjab and Sindh is expected to push temperatures as high as 48°C in Sindh, while parts of Punjab could experience temperatures 6 to 8°C above the seasonal average.
Authorities have issued alerts urging the public to take safety measures.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), extreme heat is forecast for Punjab starting today (Sunday), with the temperature expected to remain significantly higher than usual for the next three days. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has also issued a weather alert, highlighting the risks posed by the ongoing heatwave.
Southern Punjab will likely see temperatures 6 to 8 degrees Celsius above normal, while northern parts of the province will face intensifying heat from April 14 to 18. Authorities have warned of potential dust storms and gusty winds during this period.
Vulnerable groups at higher risk
Health experts have raised concerns about the impact of the heatwave on children, the elderly, and women, urging extra precautions. Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary sun exposure, stay indoors during peak hours, and increase water intake.
Sindh braces for extreme temperatures
In Sindh, including Karachi, hot and dry winds have already started blowing, further aggravating the situation. The Met Office forecasts that temperatures in most cities of Sindh could soar between 46°C to 48°C in the coming days, significantly raising the heat index and health risks.
The PMD and PDMA continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to stay informed through official weather updates and adhere to safety guidelines.
