Mushroom farming initiated in Karak to generate revenue
Mushroom farming in Karak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has surged due to its economic opportunities and skill development for local youth.
A 25-year-old entrepreneur from Karak, Zeeshan Khattak, has transformed a modest rented space into a thriving mushroom farm, generating substantial monthly profits.
Inspired by research conducted during his time at Peshawar’s Agricultural University, Khattak embarked on this venture four years ago.
Khattak specialized in various types of mushrooms, including oyster mushrooms (scientific name Pleurotus ostreatus), which he sells to hotels in Peshawar at rates ranging from Rs300 to Rs350 per kg.
Additionally, he sells white mushrooms (Agaricus bisporus) and golden button mushrooms at prices between Rs1200 and Rs1800 per kg.
Khattak has also gained popularity for producing mushroom-based products like pickles, protein powder, and cookies, which are widely appreciated by consumers.
He maintains optimal cultivation conditions year-round, resulting in a monthly income of approximately Rs300,000 to Rs400,000.
Khattak is committed to empowering other young individuals in his community.
He actively promotes mushroom farming as a viable income source, particularly for women seeking home-based opportunities.
