Balochistan govt warns of action against BNP long march
Balochistan government spokesman Shahid Rind has hinted at potential action against the Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) long march, stating that “some elements are determined to hold the Red Zone hostage.”
During a press conference, Rind stated that the government is particularly concerned about speeches made by the party’s leadership during the march and indicated that legal measures will be pursued.
He noted that the government has demonstrated patience thus far and has engaged in negotiations with march participants on two occasions. While they were permitted to proceed to Shahwani Stadium on Sariab Road, the participants have not complied.
Rind expressed hope for a resolution through dialogue, however, he warned that the government has alternative options if the marchers remain obstinate.
The spokesperson emphasised that certain elements of the BNP-M are intent on taking over the Red Zone, but the government will not allow this.
Currently, Section 144 is enforced in the province, and any violations will be addressed legally.
The BNP-M has announced plans to commence the long march towards Quetta on April 6, instructing its activists to reach Lakpass in Mastung by April 5.
The party is demanding the release of all leaders from its youth wing and has garnered support from other opposition parties, including the National Party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, and Awami National Party, signaling that the march could become a significant political event.
The government has implemented stricter measures to prevent participants from entering Quetta, including deploying containers at key routes and increasing security personnel.
Meanwhile, negotiations are reportedly ongoing through political and tribal channels.
Chief Minister Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti has held meetings with opposition leaders, including National Party chief Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch and Mulana Abdul Wase during the Eid holidays.
Bugti has also suggested the formation of a committee to address the issues raised by the opposition, potentially chaired by Dr. Malik or the Leader of the Opposition in the Provincial Assembly of Balochistan Mir Younus Aziz Zehri.
