No change in solar energy policy priorities, clarifies PM Shehbaz
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting renewable energy, emphasizing that there is no change in the country’s solar energy policy or its priorities.
Chairing an important review meeting on the Power Division, Prime Minister Shehbaz directed officials to dispel any public misconceptions about the solarisation policy through facts and figures. “The promotion of renewable energy remains a top priority for the government,” he asserted.
The clarification from the prime minister follows reports that the government was planning to reduce solar energy buyback rates to Rs10 from the current Rs27 per unit or kilowatt hours. There are also reports that the government will impose GST on the power consumed by net metering consumers from the national grid during night hours.
Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting on Sunday to accelerate reforms in the power sector. The prime minister instructed the authorities to expedite the privatization of electricity distribution companies and resolve all legal matters related to the liquidation of generation companies swiftly.
Prime Minister Shehbaz also announced that a comprehensive package to reduce electricity tariffs is being prepared. “This package, based on an effective and inclusive strategy, will be announced soon,” he assured.
Highlighting the government’s focus on power sector reforms, he pledged to provide further relief to the public by reducing electricity costs and improving the efficiency of power distribution.
The meeting underscored the government’s resolve to enhance energy sustainability through solarisation while ensuring transparency and public awareness about ongoing initiatives.
