Protests continue across Sindh against the construction of new canals on the Indus River.

In Mirpurkhas, college and university students staged a demonstration, while in Kotri, female students and teachers organised a rally.

Employees of Civil Hospital Sajawal also joined the protest, demanding an end to the project.

Students from various colleges and universities in Mirpurkhas gathered outside the local press club to voice their opposition to the new canal projects.

They highlighted the ongoing agricultural water shortage in Sindh, stating that the province is receiving only 4,800 cusecs of water instead of the allocated 13,000 cusecs — barely enough to meet drinking water needs.

This shortfall, they pointed out, has already been acknowledged in a notice issued by the provincial irrigation department.

The protesters emphasised that due to water scarcity, 2.5 million acres of mango orchards and other crops are at risk of destruction. Many mango orchards are already drying up before the harvesting season begins.

Chanting slogans against the new canal projects, they demanded an immediate and adequate supply of water to Sindh’s farmlands.

Meanwhile, in Kotri, female students from the Government Girls Degree College staged a rally against the proposed six new canals to be drawn from the Indus River.

Teachers and students participated in large numbers, arguing that the Indus sustains over 60 million people, providing water not just for human consumption but also for livestock and agriculture.

“We reject the plan to extract six canals from the Indus to irrigate Cholistan,” they asserted.

“If the Indus does not receive its rightful share of water, not only will agriculture collapse, but businesses, educational institutions, cities, and villages will also face ruin.”

They demanded the immediate cancellation of the canal project, holding placards and banners with slogans against the government’s decision.

In Sajawal, employees of Civil Hospital also joined the movement, staging a protest against the extraction of new canals from the Indus River.

Chanting slogans against the government, they demanded an immediate reversal of the decision, warning of severe consequences for Sindh’s agricultural and economic stability.

The growing resistance across Sindh underscores the deep concern among locals over water shortages and the potential devastation to the province’s agriculture and livelihoods.

Protesters have vowed to continue their demonstrations until their demands are met.
