Sixth polio case of 2025 surfaces in Pakistan
Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health confirmed the sixth case of polio in Pakistan this year, with the latest case originating from District Thatta in Sindh.
This marks the fourth polio case reported in the province for 2025, according to the Pakistan Polio Eradication Programme website.
The emergence of this case raises concerns about the ongoing presence of polio in certain areas of the country.
In the previous year, Pakistan saw 74 polio cases, predominantly from Balochistan (27 cases) and Sindh (23 cases), with Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa reporting 22 cases and Punjab and Islamabad each recording one.
Polio is a disease that leads to paralysis. It can be prevented through vaccination, especially for children under five.
Health officials emphasize the necessity of completing the full vaccination schedule to enhance immunity, particularly in regions like Sindh where cases are more prevalent.
In response to the threat of polio, vaccination campaigns are being conducted across Pakistan. Earlier this month, the first nationwide campaign of 2025 reached over 45 million children.
A targeted campaign in Quetta Division and Karachi vaccinated approximately 900,000 children with both injectable and oral polio vaccines.
To combat potential cross-border transmission, targeted vaccination efforts were carried out in 104 union councils near Afghanistan and those hosting Afghan refugees, vaccinated over 600,000 children.
