Government should lift ban on X as PECA Act is in place, says Barrister Aqeel Malik

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Law, Barrister Aqeel Malik, has called for lifting the ban on the social media platform X, stating that the PECA Act is now in effect.

He noted that despite the ban, people are using VPNs to access the platform, making the restriction ineffective.

Speaking on Aaj TV’s programme “News Insight with Amir Zia”, Malik emphasised that fake news and doctored videos are a serious concern.

“There is consensus that false news must be addressed. However, if the information is correct, people should have the right to express themselves online,” he said.

He stressed the need to distinguish between truth and misinformation while calling for an end to fabricated videos.

Malik acknowledged that the PECA Act could be improved and said the government is open to discussions with media organizations.

“We have sought input and draft proposals from journalist bodies to refine the law,” he added.

He also expressed surprise at Justice Akhtar Hussain’s last-minute resignation from the Judicial Commission, despite being actively involved in judicial appointments.

Meanwhile, senior PPP leader Syed Naveed Qamar raised concerns over the ongoing canal projects linked to the Indus River.

He compared the situation to past resistance against the Kalabagh Dam and warned of public opposition if Sindh’s water rights were compromised.

“We are not against greening Cholistan, but the real issue is water distribution. The government has not yet consulted us on the matter. If Sindh’s people feel wrong, there will be resistance,” Qamar asserted.

He added that ruling authorities fail to grasp their stance and may need alternative means of persuasion.

The debate over social media regulations and water management continues to intensify, reflecting broader tensions in governance and policy-making.
