A 40-year-old Filipino expat, Jesy Garcia Basilio, has undergone surgery to remove a cricket ball-sized jaw tumour and reconstruct his jaw using bone from his leg, Khaleej Times reported. The procedure took place at the Aster Hospital in Dubai.

Basilio had been living with a rare, non-cancerous tumour known as Ameloblastoma for eight years, which had grown to 8cm and caused him discomfort, affecting his ability to eat, drink, and speak.

The rapid growth of the tumour in the past six months left him with a disfigured jaw and severe pain.

After months of suffering, he sought medical assistance at the Aster Hospital Mankhool, where a specialised team led by Dr Renju Prem, an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialist, and Dr Rajkumar Ramachandran, a consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, developed a comprehensive treatment plan.

Ameloblastoma is a rare condition, accounting for about 1% of all oral tumours, with an incidence rate of only 0.5 cases per million people each year, primarily found in regions like India, Africa, and China.

The surgical team opted for a microvascular fibula flap reconstruction technique, which involved removing the damaged section of Basilio’s jaw and replacing it with a piece of bone from his leg.

The method preserved both the function and aesthetics of his face. The fibula was shaped to fit the jaw’s curvature, and its blood vessels were connected to those in Basilio’s neck to promote healing.

The procedure was planned and executed, followed by extensive post-operative care, including monitoring in the ICU and regular follow-ups. Basilio’s recovery has led to a significant improvement in his ability to eat, drink, and speak without discomfort.

“I cannot thank Dr. Renju Prem, Dr. Rajkumar Ramachandran, and the entire team enough. Their expertise and care have given me my life back. I feel like myself again, and I am forever grateful,” Basilio stated.
