The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has released its forecast regarding the sighting of the Ramazan and Eid al-Fitr moons in Pakistan.

According to SUPARCO’s statement, the first fast of Ramazan in Pakistan is expected to be observed on March 2, 2025.

New moon’s birth and visibility

The new moon will be born on February 28, 2025, at 5:45am (Pakistan time).

However, due to its low altitude (5 degrees) and a young age of only 12 hours, it will be difficult to see the crescent that evening.

The angular distance between the sun and the moon will be 7 degrees, making it nearly impossible to view with the naked eye.

As per SUPARCO, Saudi Arabia may spot the crescent on February 28, which means Ramazan in the Kingdom could begin on March 1, while in Pakistan, it is expected to start on March 2 .

Eid al-Fitr date prediction

The commission also predicts that the Shawwal moon is likely to be sighted on March 30, 2025, which means Eid al-Fitr in Pakistan could fall on March 31.

However, the final decision regarding moon sighting rests with the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

Ramazan holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide.

Since the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, the start of Ramazan varies by country, depending on moon sightings.

Traditional committees rely on naked-eye observation, while modern technology and astronomical calculations aid predictions.

Global Ramazan 2025 start dates

Saudi Arabia and Gulf Countries: The moon sighting committee will search for the crescent on February 28. If visible, Ramadan will begin on March 1; otherwise, it will start on March 2.

Pakistan and India: Following local moon sighting traditions, Ramazan is likely to begin on March 2, 2025.

Europe and USA: Some mosques follow Saudi Arabia’s announcement, meaning some communities may start fasting on March 1, while others may follow local sightings and begin on March 2.
