Bollywood’s gender pay gap: Female actors earn less than male stars, says Nandita Das

I receive ‘immense love and respect’ in Pakistan, says the acclaimed filmmaker

Renowned Indian filmmaker, director, and actress Nandita Das has criticised the pay disparity in Bollywood, stating that female actors are consistently paid less than their male counterparts.

Speaking on Aaj TV’s programme Spotlight with host Munizae Jahangir, Das remarked, “Deepika Padukone will always earn less than Shah Rukh Khan. Even an A-list male actor won’t work for the same amount as an A-list female actor.”

She further shared that her background in social work has shaped her perspective, and unlike many in the film industry, she did not grow up watching movies. Reflecting on her experiences in Pakistan, Das said, “I receive immense love and respect there.”

The acclaimed actress and director also expressed her deep connection to the Indian film Arth, calling it “very close to my heart.”

However, she revealed that playing bold characters in various films has led to serious threats against her.

Speaking about global peace, Das emphasised the need for a world where “everyone is treated with equal dignity.”

She acknowledged that achieving such harmony may take “several generations,” but insisted that efforts must continue, stating, “There can be no peace without justice.”

Discussing her admiration for legendary writer Saadat Hasan Manto, Das said, “I have read Manto, and he was an extraordinary man. His habits reminded me of my father. That’s when I decided to make a film about him.”

Despite her acclaimed career, Das admitted that acting was never her primary passion. “I accepted many film roles reluctantly. Now, I’m often offered repetitive characters, while younger actresses get better opportunities,” she shared.

She said that challenges exist everywhere and must be confronted head-on.
