A Bering Air flight carrying 10 passengers has gone off the radar near Nome, raising concerns of a possible crash, and a search operation is underway.

The White Mountain fire chief, Jack Adams, told Alaska’s News Source that the plane disappeared from the radar somewhere along the coast of Nome to Topkok. He also said they have crews “actively searching” a roughly 30-mile stretch in that area.

“They’re prepared to be out all night, they will search here until they find them or somebody else finds them,” Adams said. “If they don’t find anything, we’ll probably rally another crew to go and help.”

The Bering Air Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX, registered as N321BA, took off from Unalakleet, Alaska, on a scheduled route to Nome but lost contact during the flight.

The aircraft was last detected shortly after takeoff before disappearing from radar.

Alaska State Troopers have confirmed that the missing plane was part of a commercial flight.

In a dispatch, Alaska State Troopers stated that they were notified by the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center about the missing aircraft at 4pm ( Alaska Standard Time).

“We are currently doing an active ground search from Nome and from White Mountain and have as much up-to-date information on the event as possible. Due to weather and visibility, we are limited on-air search at the current time. National Guard and Coast Guard and Troopers have been notified and are active in the search. Norton Sound Health Corporation is standing by,” the fire department said.
