Delhi Metro faces backlash for ad featuring rape convict Asaram Bapu
India’s Delhi Metro was under fire on Friday after a lawyer criticised the organization for displaying advertisements featuring Asaram Bapu, a convicted rapist.
The ads promoted “Parents Worship Day” and included images of the self-styled godman, who serves a life sentence following his conviction in a 2013 rape case.
The lawyer took to social media to express outrage, questioning how the Delhi Metro could allow advertisements for a criminal convicted of serious offences. He described the decision as “highly shameful.”
In response to the criticism, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) assured the people that it has initiated the process to remove the controversial ads.
The DMRC stated that it has issued “immediate instructions” to its licensee to take down the advertisements as soon as possible, though the removal process may take some time.
