In a devastating early morning assault on Thursday, armed militants attacked a police checkpost in Bahadurkhel, Karak, resulting in the deaths of two police officers.

The attackers, heavily armed, opened fire on the police station, killing driver Naqeeb and officer Adnan. Six other personnel were injured.

Four of the injured officers were rushed to the District Headquarters Hospital in Karak, while two critically wounded personnel were transferred to Peshawar for advanced medical care. In response to the attack, local police forces engaged the assailants, who managed to escape the scene.

District Police Officer (DPO) Karak confirmed that a significant police presence was deployed to secure the area and initiate a search operation for the perpetrators.

Heightened security measures have been implemented across the region to prevent further incidents.

This attack highlights a troubling increase in militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Just days prior, a policeman was killed during an anti-polio campaign in Khyber district, and an inoculation team faced an ambush in Bakarabad, underscoring the persistent threat from militant groups, particularly the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy to address the escalating violence in the region, which has seen over 1,600 fatalities in attacks throughout 2023, marking it as one of the deadliest years in nearly a decade.
