Magnitude 6.2 earthquake strikes off North Maluku Coast, Indonesia

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the coast of North Maluku, Indonesia, on Wednesday, according to the geophysics agency.

The quake occurred at a depth of 81 km (50 miles) and was reported to have no tsunami potential.

There were no immediate reports of damage, and Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Indonesia is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area known for its high seismic activity due to the meeting of tectonic plates, leading to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

On January 7, an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck a remote region of Tibet, resulting in at least 95 fatalities.

Similarly, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu on December 24, 2024.
