Detroit Rapper Dank Demoss sues Lyft over alleged weight-based discrimination
Detroit-based rapper Dank Demoss has filed a lawsuit against ride-share giant Lyft, claiming she was denied entry into a vehicle she ordered due to her weight.
On Tuesday, Demoss announced the lawsuit on social media, sharing videos of herself with her attorneys.
The suit was filed in Wayne County Circuit Court in Michigan against Lyft and an unidentified driver, referred to as John Doe, for allegedly violating Michigan’s Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, which bans discrimination based on factors like weight, among others.
According to the complaint, on January 18, Demoss paid for a Lyft ride from her Detroit home to a football watch party at her cousin’s house. When the driver arrived in a Mercedes-Benz sedan, she attempted to enter the vehicle, but the driver allegedly locked the doors and tried to drive away.
On January 19, Demoss, legally known as Dajua Blanding, posted a video on Instagram showing an encounter with a driver, allegedly from Lyft, who refused to give her a ride.
“I’m sorry. I [have] got no space. My car is small,” the driver said in the clip.
“I can fit in this car,” Demoss replied.
“Believe me you can’t. … So I’m sorry. I’m gonna cancel [the ride]; you’re not gonna be charged,” the driver stated.
“So you’re telling me I can’t get in the Lyft because I can’t fit in your car? … So are you telling me I’m too big to get in your car so I’ve got to order another Lyft?” Demoss said.
The driver agreed with the singer that she needed to order a big car.
