Convoy of 120 vehicles carrying essential goods reaches Parachinar
A convoy of 120 vehicles loaded with essential goods has successfully reached Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Parachinar on Monday.
The convoy, consisting of food items and other supplies, made its way from Hangu to Parachinar, where relief efforts continued for Kurram.
The provincial government has claimed that the distribution of financial assistance to those affected was underway.
According to district administration, during the last tribal council meeting on January 25, elders from Lower Kurram participated, but the elders from Upper Kurram and Parachinar refused to attend. A follow-up government delegation with the elders from Upper Kurram and Parachinar is expected soon.
The convoy was sent from Hangu with tight security measures.
Hangu District Police Officer Muhammad Khalid Khan, confirmed that the convoy had reached Parachinar “safely.” Meanwhile, Kohat Commissioner Motassim Ballah and Regional Police Officer Abbas Majid Marwat visited Bagan to assess the damages caused in the region.
Over 4,000 overseas citizens and more than 3,000 students from Upper Kurram are awaiting a passage. Thousands of people are currently stranded on both sides.
Meanwhile, a convoy of 70 vehicles carrying food, fruits, vegetables, household goods, and medicines also departed from Thall towards Parachinar.
Shortage of fuel
However, the region is facing a dire shortage of petrol, diesel, and LPG, with no indication of oil tankers arriving soon, exacerbating the difficulties for residents.
For the past four months, more than a hundred villages surrounding Parachinar have been under continuous siege, significantly impacting the daily lives of the people and causing widespread distress.
In addition, over four thousand overseas residents and more than three thousand students from Upper Kurram are waiting to leave their homes.
The petrol shortage has forced residents to carry the deceased on foot over long distances.
In one instance, relatives in Parachinar transported a body fifteen kilometres on foot from a hospital to their home due to the lack of transportation.
The advisor to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Ali Amin Gandapur on Information and Public Relations, Barrister Muhammad Saif stated that measures are being taken to secure the routes, including the dismantling of bunkers under a peace agreement in the area.
The member of the Provincial Assembly of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ali Hadi has called on the government to address violations of the peace agreement.
A convoy of 70 vehicles carrying essential relief supplies successfully reached the Kurram tribal district on Saturday, January 25, escorted by strong security measures implemented by the government, marking the fifth delivery of aid to the region.
The district administration has reported the confiscation of a significant cache of arms and the destruction of eight illegal bunkers. The DC issued a warning of strict consequences for any violations of the peace agreement in the area.
Security forces imposed a curfew in Lower Kurram and did an operation in Bagan to find and apprehend terrorists involved in a recent attack on an aid convoy that killed multiple officials and truck drivers on January 9.
Kurram’s Parachinar experienced severe price increases for daily commodities as all major roads to the district remained blocked on January 23. The ongoing crisis has led to significant shortages of essential food items, pushing prices to record levels.
