Etihad rail announces high-speed train from Abu Dhabi to Dubai
Etihad Rail has announced a high-speed train project connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai, reducing travel time to just 30 minutes at speeds of up to 350km/h.
Passenger services would cover six strategically located stations at Reem Island, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Zayed Airport, close to Al Maktoum Airport in Dubai, and the Jaddaf area of Dubai, Al Arabiya English reported.
The project received the endorsement of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, with the announcement seen by Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.
Etihad Rail would oversee the development and operation of this initiative, projected to contribute approximately Dh145 billion to the UAE’s GDP over the next 50 years. The high-speed service would utilise the same network as the previously announced Etihad Rail freight trains.
On the sidelines of the high-speed train announcement, UAE leaders reviewed a presentation on the country’s first passenger train fleet. They toured a train showcasing its design and features.
The first four passengesr rail stations, located in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah, would enhance access to rail services for residents and visitors. Such stations would be integrated with metro and bus lines, creating a comprehensive transport network.
Stations would feature business-class lounges, retail outlets, and family-friendly amenities, with designs inspired by Emirati heritage. Although the construction cost was not disclosed, tenders for project contracts have been issued, and network designs approved.
Future phases of the project would be developed in the coming years, with details on service costs and start dates yet to be announced.
Crown Prince of Abu Dubai Sheikh Khaled said: “The project unlocks new horizons for comprehensive development by advancing national transportation and infrastructure and ensuring a sustainable future for current and future generations.”
