NA passes PECA amendment bill as journalists protest
National Assembly has passed the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (PECA) Amendment Bill, 2024, despite protests from journalists. The bill, which significantly strengthens social media regulations, was passed by a majority vote during a session chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq.
The amendment, presented by Federal Minister Rana Tanveer, was added to the agenda as a supplementary item.
Its introduction prompted immediate protests from journalists who walked out of the press gallery in opposition to the PECA Act. They argue the bill will stifle free speech and press freedom.
Following the walkout, the assembly proceeded with a clause-by-clause vote on the amendment, ultimately approving it with a majority.
