Passengers will be able to travel 200 kilometers for 1800 rupees

The Sindh provincial government is intensifying its efforts to launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service, holding a second high-level meeting in 24 hours to finalize plans. The meeting, chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon and Provincial Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, focused on expediting the establishment of charging stations.

Attendees in the meeting included the Secretary of Planning & Development, Najam Shah; the Secretary of Transport, Asad Zaman; the MD of Sindh Mass Transit Authority, Kamal Dayo; and the Project Director of Peoples Bus Service, Sohaib Shafiq, among others.

Officials briefed the ministers on the operational model, benefits, and affordability of the EV taxi service. They projected that passengers could travel 200 kilometers for 1800 rupees, highlighting the service’s economic and environmentally friendly nature.

For reference, personal cars usually cost Rs20 per kilometre while ride hailing serveices charge Rs35-40 for the same distance. However, with the EV taxis, the projected cost is around Rs9/km.

Minister Memon directed that the first batch of EV taxis should be operational by February. Both Memon and Shah instructed relevant departments to ensure the timely completion of necessary infrastructure, including EV charging stations.

Minister Memon emphasized that the EV taxi service will revolutionize Sindh’s transportation system by providing a cheaper and eco-friendly alternative. He reiterated the government’s commitment to launching the service without delay, aligning with their vision for a modern and sustainable transportation system. He also highlighted the service’s potential to create employment opportunities for young people, protect the environment, and stimulate investment.

Minister Shah added that the initiative aims to create a comprehensive EV ecosystem in Sindh, encompassing everything from charging infrastructure to innovative financing models. He announced plans to collaborate with banks to provide easy installment plans for unemployed youth to acquire EV taxis. He stated that empowering citizens and fostering self-reliance is a key part of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s vision for a brighter future.

The meeting also reviewed various banking models to facilitate the provision of EV taxis on easy installments for unemployed youth.
