The authorized assembler and distributor of KIA vehicles in Pakistan, Lucky Motor, is preparing to introduce a range of electric SUVs, including the high-end EV9 model, marking a significant step in the country’s electric vehicle market.

Muhammad Faisal, CEO of Lucky Motor, announced that the KIA flagship SUV, the EV9, will be launched soon, along with plans for a more compact model, the EV3, in the future.

The new electric vehicles (EVs) will be imported as completely built units (CBUs). Following the successful debut of the KIA EV5 in October 2024, which has already been delivered to many buyers, the company is optimistic about the growing demand for electric vehicles in Pakistan.

The EV5 variants include the long-range Earth model, capable of 620 km on a single charge, priced at Rs23 million, and the short-range Air model, which offers 480 km for Rs18.5 million.

Faisal noted that the primary buyers of the EV5 are corporate executives and business owners from major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.

He also acknowledged that the local market is gradually embracing electric vehicles, viewing them as symbols of status despite their higher costs compared to conventional cars.

While the government is actively promoting electric vehicles and plans to establish 3,500 charging stations in collaboration with a Chinese firm, Faisal expressed skepticism about the ambitious target to increase the share of EVs to 30% of total sales by 2030, estimating it may only reach 10%.

Lucky Motor’s entry into the electric vehicle sector reflects a broader trend towards sustainable transportation in Pakistan, as the company looks to cater to a growing market for environmentally friendly vehicles.
