Sindh health minister denies news of Covid-19 spread in Karachi
Sindh’s Health Minister Dr Azra Pechuho has dismissed reports of a widespread COVID-19 outbreak in Karachi. In a statement, she said that out of over 100 COVID-19 tests conducted in the city, only seven came back positive. She characterized reports of a significant outbreak as inaccurate.
The Minister noted that those who tested positive exhibited only mild flu-like symptoms and were sent home. She further explained that influenza A (H1N1) is being confirmed in 10-12% of patients, while RSV and other respiratory viruses are detected in 5-10% of children.
Dr. Pechuho also pointed out that many patients do not undergo testing, leading to underreporting of illnesses.
The Minister stated that COVID-19 is now being treated similarly to influenza worldwide, characterizing it as a seasonal flu and urging against undue alarm.
This statement comes after reports surfaced indicating that 30% of patients presenting with cold and cough symptoms in Karachi were testing positive for COVID-19, prompting the issuance of guidelines to hospitals.
