Former child star Rory Sykes dies in LA fire
Rory Sykes, a former British child actor who appeared in the 1990s TV show “Kiddy Kapers,” died in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, his mother, Shelley Sykes, has confirmed. The 32-year-old, who was blind and had cerebral palsy, perished in his Malibu home as water supplies dwindled, leaving firefighters unable to effectively combat the blazes.
Shelley Sykes recounted a harrowing ordeal, describing her desperate attempts to save her son. She stated that water pressure had completely failed, rendering her garden hose useless. Despite rushing to the nearest fire station for assistance, she was informed that they too lacked water access.
Upon returning to her property, she found her son’s cottage completely destroyed. Authorities later confirmed Rory Sykes died from carbon monoxide poisoning.
The tragic incident has highlighted the severe water shortages experienced during the initial firefighting efforts, leading to widespread anger among residents.
The devastating wildfires have claimed at least 24 lives, with other victims including a man found clutching a garden hose and an 82-year-old who died in his bed. The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to Sykes’ family.
