Supply convoys to Parachinar stalled five days after peace agreement, 29 trucks left stranded
Five days after a peace agreement was reached, supply convoys to Parachinar have yet to be dispatched, leaving 29 trucks loaded with goods stranded at the Tull Kent compound. Meanwhile, 51 trucks have already returned to Peshawar.
A rocket was fired at a village late last night, though no casualties were reported.
The district administration is taking steps to secure the Kurram Highway, indicating that negotiations with local tribal leaders are ongoing in Thal. They assure that relief supplies will be sent as soon as security arrangements on the Parachinar Highway finalized.
The only main road linking Kurram district to other regions remains closed for 94 consecutive days, severely restricting traffic. This blockade has left Parachinar city and over a hundred villages in Upper Kurram isolated, leading to a growing humanitarian crisis. Residents are facing starvation due to a lack of food supplies, with local vegetables like onions and tomatoes entirely depleted. Potatoes are currently selling for Rs550 per kilogram.
The president of the trade union reported that warehouses, shops, and business centers are empty, with most establishments closed. Civil society organizations in Parachinar have revealed that 147 children have died due to a lack of medicine and adequate healthcare. Hospitals are experiencing long queues for essential medications such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.
Additionally, the president of the medical union stated that outpatient care is unavailable and pharmacies are out of stock. The absence of petrol and diesel has caused public transport, ATMs, and mobile networks to shut down, disrupting communication and causing significant difficulties for residents.
