Severe rainfall causes flooding, traffic disruptions in Saudi Arabia
Heavy rains have been affecting several regions in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Mecca and Medina, leading to significant flooding and traffic issues as of January 7.
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture reported that the Badr governorate experienced the highest rainfall, with Al Shafiyah receiving 49.2 mm, followed by Jeddah’s Al Basateen district at 38 mm.
In Medina, the Central Haram Area near the Prophet’s Mosque recorded 36.1 mm, while other notable areas such as Al Masjid in Badr and Quba Mosque saw 33.6 mm and 28.4 mm, respectively.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has forecasted continued rainfall across various regions, including Mecca, Medina, Qassim, Tabuk, Northern Borders, and Al Jouf.
The NCM has downgraded the weather alert for Jeddah from red to orange, indicating moderate rain and advising the public of potential hazards such as strong winds, low visibility, and high waves.

King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah has urged travelers to check with airlines regarding flight schedules due to the adverse weather conditions.
In response to the flooding, the Jeddah Mayoralty has mobilized over 4,000 personnel to manage water removal and maintain traffic flow across affected areas.
Residents are advised to exercise caution and stay informed about the evolving weather situation.
