Madonna reflects on how her mother’s death transformed her life
American singer-songwriter and record producer Madonna has shared insights into the impact her mother’s passing had on her life for the first time following recent Christmas celebrations with her family.
The pop icon lost her mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone, to breast cancer in 1966, and in her new documentary, Becoming Madonna, she describes how this event altered her.
While reflecting on her childhood, Madonna stated, “When I was five years old, it felt like my world turned upside down. It was as if a part of my heart was ripped out.”
She expressed the emptiness she felt after her mother’s death, emphasising that it forced her to mature quickly and grapple with the psychological complexities surrounding the loss—an overwhelming burden for a child.
Earlier this year, during her Celebration Tour, Madonna dedicated a segment to her mother, performing in front of a large photograph of her.
